Spot Satellite Tracker
The Spot Satellite Tracker is a very comprehensive tracker, suited for those who love to be outdoors. The Spot Satellite Tracker can send location information by email, text message and the location is viewable on an online map. The Spot Satellite tracker is very good value at just £150 but you do require an £80 a year subscription to use the service. I don’t think that this is unreasonable, as all the other services either require a monthly subscription or for a mobile phone top up to be made which would be around the same price.
The Spot Satellite tracker is pretty damn impressive! It can work between -40 degrees and up to 85 degrees at altitudes of -300 up to 21,300 feet. It is waterproof to a meter, but not only that, if you drop it in water it will float! Spot has a battery life of a year, depending on which mode you use
It has 3 different modes, which are Alert 911 (or 999 for us). This is only to be used in real emergencies as every 5 minutes it sends an emergency distress signal, until cancelled, so that emergency services can locate you. All you need is a clear line to the sky and the unit should be picked up by satellite. If you do a lot of trekking or sports which are off the beaten track then this really does make Spot a must! How many times have horror stories of missing travellers been in the news?
The second mode is ‘check in’. This just lets your friends and family know where you are, by sending them a written message with your location via text or email. The final mode is ‘Help!’. This is similar to the Alert 911 mode, however it does not send an alert message to the emergency services, but sends a message to your contacts with your location every 5 minutes for an hour. This could come in handy if you get caught out somewhere, but just so that you can be found in a busy shopping centre.
Spot Satellite Tracker has a very good coverage, but there are some areas which it will not work in. Below is a chart showing the areas it covers and how well it covers them.
